To create the perfect living space, architects and designers have used the timeless Golden Ratio design concept. This old principle has grown roots in mathematics and received admiration for its harmony and balance; hallmarked with the creation of homes that transcend architectural excellence. This design concept depicts the evolving way of life, making inspirational and delightful homes.
This design approach centres on balance, symmetry and elegance. It draws inspiration from the mathematical ratio of 1:1.618. Nature showcases this ratio everywhere – from seashell spirals to human body shapes. Architects capture this natural harmony in home designs. They craft spaces that strike a chord with people. Their goal is to mirror the innate sense of proportion found in nature and create deeply comfortable homes.
The application of this concept in home design is a meticulous process where every detail is carefully considered to achieve a harmonious whole. From room layouts to window placements and wall curves, every element creates a living environment that feels intrinsically correct. The result is a fulfilling space that provides residents with a sense of peace. For example, the golden ratio to balance room design through furniture would give about 60% of floor area to furniture, leaving about 40% free.
To enhance a space, the Golden Ratio can be used to relate two pieces of furniture. Take your sofa and coffee table, for example. A good rule of thumb is to choose a coffee table that is about 40% the size of your sofa. The same idea works for rugs too. Your sofa should take up about 40% of the rug, with the rest of the rug extending beyond it. This creates a balanced, cosy feel that is pleasing to the eye. A similar approach can be applied to painting a room, where 60% of the room is painted in the primary colour, 30% in the secondary colour and 10% in a tertiary or accenting colour to enliven the other two colours.
The Golden Ratio comes in handy even when hanging art. The trick is to mentally divide the wall into thirds. Ideally, a picture should be positioned such that its centre is either two-thirds up the wall and one-third down from the ceiling or one-third up from the floor – or exactly in the centre.
This design concept meets the innate human hunger for meaning and purpose. Homes mirror the values, aspirations and personalities of people.
